Know The Neighborhood: Spring Lake, New Jersey

As a hyper-local agent in Southern Monmouth County, and a trusted resource when it comes to knowing the best of the best of the Jersey Shore, I am always asked about the area! To answer some of your questions, I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite shore towns in my “Know the Neighborhood” Blog! Welcome, I hope you enjoy the read!

So let’s start - I thought it would be most appropriate to initiate this blog topic with my hometown and one I hold close to my heart; beautiful Spring Lake, New Jersey.

Some of the topics I will touch on include:

  • Things To Do

  • Restaurants & Recreation

  • Financial Elements

  • Education System

Things To Do

  • Ride an electric bike down scenic Ocean Avenue! Safely explore all that Spring Lake has to offer on an electric bicycle. Located just three blocks from the beach, this father-son owned Pedego Electric Bikes Spring Lake will help you create your own adventure at the Jersey Shore.

  • Enjoy a tour of the iconic St. Catharine’s Catholic Church! What can be considered one of the iconic symbols of Spring Lake, the stunning St. Catharine Church overlooks the lake and nearby Divine Park. Built in the early 1900’s, the cathedral type architecture both inside and outside is truly beautiful and worth the visit. Most of the pews are currently closed off, but there are a few open for safe distancing.

  • Take a nature walk through Divine Park! The trail through Divine Park offers beautiful views of the lake and the native birds and wildflowers. There are two outdoor play areas and tennis courts for children and adults alike, and the entire park offers photographic spots for weddings, engagement photos and the like! I’d also encourage taking a visit to one of these local markets to pick up lunch or some picnic-style snacks to savour while you take in the quaintness of the park and neighborhood!

  • Opt to see a Broadway-quality show at the historic Spring Lake Theatre Company! The Spring Lake Theatre Company is known for producing Broadway-quality performances with talented casts, lavish sets and costumes. The Company performs 6 shows per season, with opening night ticket sales donated to a well deserving area charity. With the impact of Covid-19, the theatre needs us now more than ever. The ever-a-favorite “Scrooge” tickets just went on sale! All of the proceeds from Scrooge benefit the Spring Lake Community House Christmas Fund, generously giving local families in need of a holiday boost! If you are feeling a little “scrooge-y”, this is definitely a worthwhile activity to change your mood. All performances will be outside with limited seating so everyone remains safe!

  • Soak in the sun at Spring Lake’s stunning beaches! Of course this is seasonal, but we can’t mention Spring Lake without credit to our boardwalk and beach. Spring Lake has earned a reputation of having one of the most beautiful and well-maintained beaches in the state of New Jersey. From the North End to the South End, there is something to do for everyone from taking a refreshing dip in the ocean, soaking in some sun on the sand, visiting one of two of Spring Lake’s oceanfront pavilions, or simply taking a stroll on the boardwalk. Best times to visit are June-September, however I can be found walking on the boardwalk 12 months out of the year, as the stunning views can be enjoyed year round!

Best Places to Eat

  1. The Breakers on the Ocean- Get the authentic seaside dining at Breakers on the Ocean. This casual dining experience on the elegant oceanfront offers fresh seafood specials, cocktails, and individual house-made pizzas.

  2. Larimar Restaurant- “Seasonal ingredients and a seafood focus inform modern Italian and European fare at this Spring Lake standout, offering fine dining in a rustic-chic setting with exposed brick and banquettes.” to quote Zagat of Larimar Restaurant located on 3rd Avenue. Some favorites include the Arugula Salad, Angolotti and the Seared Diver Scallops. An excellent choice for an evening of fine dining in Spring Lake.

  3. Bareli's By the Sea- Located inside the Grand Victorian Hotel across from the ocean in beautiful Spring Lake NJ, is Bareli’s By the Sea, a fine dining restaurant serving a creative contemporary Italian menu with scenic ocean beach front views. Enjoy magnificent food and drinks with a stunning glimpse at the Atlantic across the way. They even host entertainment like a monthly comedy show on the 1st Thursday of each month - Jersey shore dining doesn't get any better than that!

Taxes & Other Rates

Excitingly, Spring Lake has ranked in the top 30 N.J. towns with the lowest property tax rates. If you're considering moving here, here’s two comprehensive financial reports for Spring Lake.

  • The official "User Friendly" tax breakdown for 2020 is found here.

  • A more comprehensive view of tax rates, avg income, and unemployment rate compared to the U.S. average can be found here.

The School Systems

Spring Lake is recognized as having one of the best education systems in the state. HW Mountz, which I attended, is a K-8 school, with our public high school located in nearby Manasquan. I have compiled some additional facts about Spring Lake public schools below.

  • On Average, Spring Lake ranks in the top 10% of New Jersey public schools.

  • The student: teacher ratio of 9:1 is less than the New Jersey public school average of 12:1.

  • Schools in Spring Lake also have an average math and reading proficiency score that is 29% higher than the state's public school average.

Places to Stay

Spring Lake is a perfect combination of coastal, Jersey Shore charm, with a combination of classic Victorian mixed with new construction making for a town filled with eclectic & beautiful homes. Some of the iconic Victorian homes have been turned into inns where you can really get the true feel for what luxury was like. The Grand Victorian Inn, The Hewitt Wellington Hotel and The Ocean House Bed & Breakfast, all come highly recommended.

Family Friendly Features

While this quaint Jersey Shore town is known to provide its residents with the quieter shore lifestyle, it boasts many family-friendly events and experiences. Although I am satisfied as long as I am by the shore, one of my family's favorite experiences is attending the summer movies and concerts at the North End Pavilion. There are also many seasonal events like the Irish Festival in June and the Italian Festival in September, packed with live music, food, and fun for people of all ages.

If Spring Lake sounds like the right place for you, let me help you find excellent homes for sale or rent, please check out my new listing at 317 Tuttle Avenue!
